AV System Compatibility Checklist: 12 Questions Before You Buy

Use this practical checklist to reduce compatibility surprises when specifying encoders, decoders, switchers, converters and extenders.

Educational information only. Confirm requirements against the current standards, product manuals and exact model datasheets before specifying or installing equipment.

Quick answer

Before buying AV equipment, document the complete signal path and verify interfaces, video formats, audio, content protection, control, cabling, latency and interoperability. A product can meet its individual specification and still fail in a mixed-vendor system if one link in the chain is incompatible.

The 12 questions

1. What is the source device and output interface? 2. What is the destination display or processor? 3. What resolution and refresh rate are required? 4. What chroma format and bit depth are needed? 5. Which audio formats and channel counts are required? 6. Is HDCP involved? 7. How should EDID be handled? 8. What is the cable type and route length? 9. Is compression acceptable and what latency is allowed? 10. Is routing one-to-one, matrix or one-to-many? 11. Which control protocol or management platform is required? 12. What are the commissioning, redundancy and support expectations?

Build a signal-flow diagram

Draw every source, encoder, switcher, converter, extender, decoder and display. Add cable types, approximate distances and the required signal format at each point. Mark any third-party devices and identify who is responsible for configuration and network settings.

Validate with real equipment

Request current datasheets and manuals for the exact model numbers. Confirm firmware versions where interoperability depends on them. Run a bench test using representative source and display models before deploying at scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is checking resolution enough? No; audio, chroma, HDCP, EDID, bandwidth, latency and control also matter. Can a distributor confirm compatibility without model numbers? Only at a preliminary level. Provide exact part numbers and signal-flow details for a reliable review.
